Tansener Tanpura

It’s a musical journey of a different note. There’s an apparent set-up of classical ambience but shrouded in mystery. The clues to a treasure, in this case Tansen’s tanpura, is hidden in some classical ragas. When Alap (Vikram Chatterjee) and Shruti (Rupsha Chatterjee) set out for Shruti’s maternal grandfather’s house in Anandagarh, little did they know that they will be involved in a treasure hunt and cracking clues. Or so the audience thinks. As the series progresses the innocent Alap, who is thrilled to receive talim from Shruti’s singer mother, does seem to have a plan in place too. These multiple angles to a treasure hunt build the momentum nicely to an engaging thriller. It’s neither too racy nor off track. There are ample relief scenes too. But though there’s a hint of mystery right from the first scene, the events in episode one take a little longer to come to the point.
The music is the backbone of this thriller. But like most thrillers it is not spine chilling or fear arousing. Rather, there are some soulful classical renditions, beautiful qawwali and peppy contemporary Bengali numbers. Moreover, it’s the musical notes that help the central characters crack the clues.
The acting is breezy by the young leads, Vikram and Rupsha. The veteran actors are seasoned in their portrayals. But the flashback scenes when Shruti’s maternal grandfather takes classical singing classes are more enjoyable than the scenes of contemporary times.
The story and script are nicely bound and there are various interesting little facts scattered around the length of the script that points towards an exciting end to the mystery. There is a distinct change in colour pallete when in flashback mode and when depicting present times, which adds to the strength of the series. But in one particular episode the lack of a tight editing is clearly evident.
