The film stars Aamir Khan as Gulshan, a talented but hot-headed basketball coach for the Delhi team. His short temper and abrasive personality frequently land him in trouble. After physically assaulting his senior coach and subsequently being caught in a drunk-driving incident, Gulshan is ordered by the court to perform community service: coaching a basketball team composed of young adults with intellectual disabilities, including Down Syndrome and autism. Initially, Gulshan is reluctant and dismissive, referring to them as “mental” and viewing the task as a punishment.
However, as Gulshan spends more time with the spirited and uniquely talented individuals on his team – including characters like Satbir, Guddu, Bantu, and Golu – his perspective slowly begins to shift. He starts to recognize their individual personalities, strengths, and infectious joy, realizing that they are not “bechaare bachche” (helpless children) but individuals with their own “normal.” The film uses humor and heartfelt moments to depict Gulshan’s journey of self-discovery, where he learns empathy, patience, and ultimately, that he is the one being taught life lessons by his unconventional team. The film highlights the importance of inclusivity and challenges societal perceptions of “normalcy,” while also exploring Gulshan’s personal struggles, including his strained relationship with his wife, Sunita (Genelia Deshmukh).
