“Kannappa,” a 2025 Indian Telugu-language mythological epic drama, was released on June 27, 2025. Directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh and produced by Mohan Babu, the film retells the ancient and revered legend of Kannappa, a devout follower of Lord Shiva. The movie stars Vishnu Manchu in the titular role of Thinnadu (who becomes Kannappa), with an ensemble cast that includes prominent cameo appearances from Prabhas (as Rudra), Akshay Kumar (as Lord Shiva), Mohanlal (as Kirata), and Kajal Aggarwal (as Goddess Parvati). The story traces the spiritual transformation of Thinnadu, a fierce tribal hunter and a staunch atheist, from the Chenchu tribe. Having witnessed a traumatic event in his childhood that shattered his faith, Thinnadu initially rejects religious rituals and idol worship. His life takes an unexpected turn when he falls in love with Nemali (Preity Mukhundhan), a princess from a neighboring tribe, leading to conflicts and eventually his exile from his own community.
During his wanderings, Thinnadu stumbles upon a deserted Shiva Lingam in the forest. Despite his initial skepticism, a profound shift occurs within him. He begins to worship Lord Shiva in his own unconventional, heartfelt way, offering whatever he can, including water from his mouth and meat from his hunts. This raw, unconditional devotion is observed by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati from their celestial abode.
The film builds towards the ultimate test of Thinnadu’s faith. When the Shiva Lingam appears to be bleeding from one of its eyes, Thinnadu, without hesitation, plucks out one of his own eyes and places it on the Lingam to stop the flow. When the other eye of the Lingam also begins to bleed, he prepares to gouge out his remaining eye, using his foot to mark the spot for placement.
