StoryLine:

The charming Chupa, a winged puppy-cat who coos and chitters, is an irresistible character in the eponymous film. This is a noticeable contrast to Cuarón’s previous work co-writing “Gravity” with his father, Alfonso Cuarón. The movie’s John Williams-esque score by Carlos Rafael Rivera and several “Jurassic Park” merchandise cameos in a 1990s setting reference the past, but “Chupa” takes too much from the clichéd toy box of family films without giving much back. Alex (Evan Whitten), a loner kid from Kansas City who is bullied by his white classmates, discovers the movie’s secret creature. Capitalist and scientific forces pursue Chupa, and Alex’s mother sends him to Mexico to stay with his former luchador grandfather (Demián Bechir) and his two cousins Luna (Ashley Ciarra) and Memo (Nickolas Verdugo).

Despite the language barrier, Alex’s hosts slowly introduce him to Mexican culture, including trying local food, playing with fireworks, and learning luchador skills like his father once did.
